ARTIST TALK
The night begins with ‘Sound and Spaces That Make Us’ – a conversation between DJs and community organisers Onio (Fylhas do Dragão, PT) and Salam Kitty (Mojxmma, UK), facilitated by Kaeto Sweeney (ASTERISK, NO). Get a glimpse into the queer party scenes of Porto and Glasgow, as we chat about grassroot music event production, building communities, queer wishes for the future and listening back to the sounds that have marked their past – all while munching on a yummy manakish* treat!
*Free manakish for the first 40 people, courtesy by our lovely neighbours Ardd Streetfood
VISUAL ART
Grounding the night is Frida Vikström’s ‘i dont want to eat life’s furniture, i want to eat life’ – a new tactile, dripping installation of found materials that speaks to queer becomings.
DJ SETS
Olof Dreijer, ONIO and Salam Kitty carry us into new heights with their DJ sets, each lifting the room with euphoric, unpredictable frequencies. Olof Dreijer, co-founder of The Knife and shapeshifting electronic visionary, brings a kaleidoscopicly groovy multi-deck set ranging from Techno and melodic house to Baile Funk and Batida, with a few cheeky acapellas thrown in for good measure. Salam Kitty’s community-rooted selections flow from queer and diasporic memory offering space for release, rage and reverence. With his chameleonic love letter to underground culture, ONIO blends funk, hyperpop and screams into a soundscape that lifts as ‘cloud9’ exhales its final breath.
Frida Vikström presents ‘ i dont want to eat life’s furniture, i want to eat life’ – a sculptural installation of found objects, words, water and clothing. Vikström works with written and material language that is moist, delicious and dripping. The objects, wet matter and words that they use form a point of departure for telling stories of queer selfhood, transformations, intimacy and belonging.
ONIO has a chameleonic ability to adapt to anywhere he DJs, making us dance like there’s no tomorrow. Originally a dancer and choreographer, he now surprises with everything from techno to house, funk to hyperpop, surreal edits, video game music and even screams. Since 2013 he has played at famous booths such as Panorama Bar (BER), Dalston Superstore (UK) and Basement (NYC). He has also been Curator and Head of Production for Bushwig festival in New York, and produced FLINTA* party Fylhas do Dragão in his hometown Porto. With dedication to underground and LGBTQIA+ communities, and a neverending curiosity, ONIO’s booth serves fun, humour and, above all, love.
Mahasin (aka Salam Kitty) is a community organiser and DJ based in Glasgow. Their DJ sets are a sonic exploration into their mixed cultural roots and queer identity, using music as a way to connect to their heritage and local community. As the co-founder of Scottish QBPoC party Mojxmma, Salam Kitty began throwing parties in early 2020, out of necessity for a space for Queer BPoC. Since then, Mojxmma has become a staple in the local scene, providing a platform to celebrate local and international BPoC talent, with past guests and collaborators including the likes of Ase Manual, Black Mamba and TYGAPAW. In 2023 they also founded Exhale Group, a free sober third space for QBPoC focused on wellbeing and advocating for racial and queer justice.
Olof Dreijer is a music producer, DJ, musician and member of the Swedish electronic pop group, The Knife. Olof has been pushing the borders of electronic music for two decades, trying to keep things fun and colourful, and has DJed throughout Europe at booths such as Panorama Bar, Dalston Superstore, Dekmantel Festival, Unsound and Club2Club London. Currently, his DJ sets feature a tight multi-deck mix of grooves ranging from funky Techno and melodic house to Baile Funk and Batida with a few cheeky acapellas thrown in for good measure. 2023 saw Olof co-found Bamba Club, a local Stockholm club night with friends to play the music they like to dance to themselves with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Olof has co-produced and remixed tracks by a number of artists, including Houeida Hedfi, Planningtorock, Fever Ray, Nine Inch Nails, Röyksopp & Robyn and Ti Chuong.
* FLINTA: frauen, lesben, intergeschlechtliche, nicht-binäre, trans, agender
